Telecommunications Major developments in communications in 1966 inclucled. (1) the start of worldwide commercial communications services offered by the U.S.-controlled, internationally owned Communications Satellite Corp.; (2) progress in solving some of the serious Owlicts involved in imposing the revolutionary technology of satellite 'communications on the existing methods of communications; (3) the first attempts to translate the economics of satellite communications to lower international rates; (4) the start of a national debate in the U.S. over financing educational television, possibly through economies expected from the use of communications satellites; (5) heavy demands on communications technology for meeting the requirements of the U.S. involvement in the war in South Vietnam; and (6) progress on new systems to improve aircraft and ship communications and navigation.
